Bangladesh Cricket Board has been forced to discard the eighth edition of Bangladesh Premier League, country's most extravagant domestic Twenty20 competition, in 2021 due to unavailability of national cricketers. According to BCB's domestic calendar for 2021-2022 there is no window for BPL in 2021 and the governing council's member secretary Ismail Haider confirmed the reason behind this is the unavailability of national stars in November due to the Pakistan tour. Consequently, the next edition of BPL will be played from January 14 to February 18, 2022 while the ninth edition of the tournament is scheduled from January 3 to February 17, 2023.

"We have a couple of windows open for the tournament (BPL). We can either arrange it for November, but the national team is scheduled to tour Pakistan during that time. We could have had it in December but again New Zealand is scheduled to visit Bangladesh during that period. So, ultimately, we have to postpone it until January next year," said Ismail on Saturday (March 13)."National team cricketers may not be able to participate in several NCL, BCL, or the Dhaka League competition, due to the international tours and series. We want to make sure we get all the front-line cricketers of Bangladesh in the BPL."BCB had a fall out with franchises after the first cycle, comprising six editions of the tournament, and took charge of the event. The seventh edition of BPL, which was named 'Bangabandhu BPL' marked the birth centenary of Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and was held from December 11, 2019 to January 17, 2020.Though BCB failed to organize BPL the following season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it did manage to host two domestic tournaments in the new normal environment - BCB Presidents Cup and the Bangabandhu T20 Cup - last year.
