The number of diabetic patients in India has been rising steadily. According to research by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), published in The Lancet, approximately 136 million people in India are pre-diabetic. In 2023, the total number of diabetic patients in India stands at 10 million.

The increase in diabetes cases is largely attributed to poor lifestyle and eating habits. According to a nutritionist, the most significant challenge for diabetic patients is effectively managing their blood sugar levels.

Experts recommend that diabetic patients engage in 30 minutes of exercise daily. Additionally, various studies suggest that a vegan diet, consisting of purely plant-based foods, may be beneficial for managing diabetes.

The Vegan Diet excludes all animal-based foods, including meat, fish, milk, yogurt, ghee, cheese, dairy products, and honey. Instead, it includes fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and other foods derived exclusively from trees and plants.

The vegan diet provides ample nutrients and helps manage insulin levels in the body. Experts say that it also regulates glucose levels, which assists in keeping blood sugar under control.

Nutritionists advise individuals with consistently rising blood sugar levels to consume foods with a low glycemic index. It is recommended to include green vegetables as much as possible in the diet. Vegetables such as bitter gourd, pumpkin, and okra are particularly beneficial for diabetic patients.

Don’t forget to combine eating green vegetables with regular exercise. Physical activity helps keep blood sugar levels under control. If you’re not engaging in intense workouts, develop a habit of walking for 30 minutes every day.
