Police custody to criminal for snatching mangalsutra

Sheikh Salim Sheikh Afzal (52, Kasambari Darga, Padegaon) was remanded police custody till December 17 by judicial magistrate first class AS Wankhede on Tuesday.

Mina Gosavi, a resident of Jiveshwar Colony in Hattesinghpura, had lodged a complaint in this regard. Accordingly, on the afternoon of September 30, Gosavi along with her daughter was heading home on foot, when a thief on a two-wheeler tried to snatch her Mangalsutra weighing 12 grams worth Rs 30,000. A case was registered in the Jinsi police station. While investigating the case, the police came to know that the Jalna crime branch had arrested Sheikh Salim Sheikh Afzal who confessed to stealing Mangalsutra from the jurisdiction of Kadim police station in Jalna and Jinsi police station in Aurangabad. Based on this information, Jinsi police arrested the accused Sheikh Salim. During the investigation, 10 cases of Mangalsutra theft were found to be registered against the accused at Kadim, Sadar Bazar and Maujpuri police stations and one case was registered at the City Chowk police station. During the hearing, the assistant public prosecutor Sameer Bedare requested the court to give police custody to the accused as they have to seize the stolen Mangalsutra, confiscate the bike used in the crime. The court then gave the above orders.
