Veteran industrialist Rahul Bajaj passes away at 83

Rahul Bajaj, Indian billionaire businessman passed away on Saturday. He was 83 years old. He was the chairman emeritus of the Indian conglomerate Bajaj Group. In 2001, Rahul Bajaj received the Padma Bhushan. From 2006 to 2010, he was a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament. Rahul Bajaj had been instrumental in bringing the Bajaj Group to prominence in five decades. Rahul Bajaj was born on June 10, 1938. Rahul Bajaj had completed his degree in Economics and Law. He had an Honours Degree in Economics from Delhi University, a degree in Law from Bombay University and also, an MBA from Harvard Business School.

In 2008, he split Bajaj Auto into three units - Bajaj Auto, finance company Bajaj Finserv and a holding company. Rahul Bajaj was grandson of Jamnalal Bajaj, an industrialist and prominent supporter of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi during India’s independence struggle.

Rahul Bajaj joined Bajaj Auto in 1968 as an executive officer. Rahul Bajaj has been instrumental in making Bajaj grow in the automotive industry. 
Last year, Rahul Bajaj resigned as chairman of Bajaj Auto. He has been in charge of Bajaj Auto for over five decades. After Rahul Bajaj, 67-year-old Neeraj Bajaj was given the chairmanship of Bajaj Auto.

Rahul Bajaj became the CEO of Bajaj Auto in 1968. When Rahul Bajaj took over as the Chief Executive Officer of Bajaj Auto Limited in the 30th year, he was said to be the youngest Indian to hold the post. After this Bajaj produced in an autocratic manner and succeeded in making itself one of the largest companies in the country. From a turnover of Rs 3 crore in 1965, Bajaj achieved a turnover of around Rs 10,000 crore in 2008.
