Every day, Indian Railways operates hundreds of trains, facilitating the travel of thousands of people from various states across the country.

Passengers traveling on trains operated by Indian Railways are required to adhere to a set of rules established by the railway authorities.

One of the lesser-known rules of Indian Railways pertains to the usage of the train chain, a mechanism that many passengers are unaware of.

During train journeys, passengers often notice a distinctive red-colored chain installed in each compartment. This chain, when pulled, promptly brings the train to a halt.

While the red chain serves as a crucial emergency tool, it has unfortunately been misused on numerous occasions for non-emergency purposes such as amusement or attempting to disembark at unauthorized stations.

Pulling the train chain without valid reason is subject to a penalty of Rs 1000 and imprisonment for up to one year.

The train chain should only be pulled in genuine emergency situations, such as medical emergencies, fire, or if there's a threat to passenger safety. In these situations, pulling the chain is not only permissible but also necessary to ensure the well-being of passengers.

Indeed, in the event of a medical emergency, coach fire, robbery, or any other accident endangering passenger safety, it is appropriate to pull the train chain to alert the authorities and prompt immediate action.
