A 31-year-old man, Sameer Naik, allegedly attempted suicide by shooting himself in the head at Sai Nagar in N-6 on Saturday. Following a detailed investigation on Sunday, Cidco police suspect substance addiction and mental stress may have led to the extreme step.

Naik had been living in a rented house in Sai Nagar for the past eight years with his mother and younger brother. The family runs a bangle shop at Bajrang Chowk and also performs priestly services. On Saturday evening, after his mother left for work, Sameer allegedly used a country-made pistol to shoot himself. His brother found him lying in a pool of blood. He was first admitted to a private hospital and later shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital. Police inspector Atul Yerme and his team rushed to the spot and initiated a probe.

Intoxicants, liquor stock found

During a late-night search of the house, police recovered around 330 suspected intoxicant tablets and 150 to 200 empty liquor bottles from Sameer’s room. Investigators suspect he frequently travelled to Ujjain to procure the substances.

Suicide note recovered

A blood-soaked handwritten note found beside him was confirmed to be a suicide note. In it, Sameer stated that he was taking the step on his own and held no one responsible.

Weapons recovery raises questions

Police also recovered an airgun along with the country-made pistol used in the attempt. Both weapons were allegedly possessed illegally. A separate case will be registered under relevant laws, and efforts are underway to trace the source of the firearms. “We have recovered the pistol and an airgun from his room. A thorough investigation is underway to identify who supplied these weapons,” said inspector Atul Yerme of Cidco police station
