As World Radio Day was observed, industry voices said Artificial Intelligence is set to become integral to radio production and on-air content.
The 2026 theme, “Radio and Artificial Intelligence: AI is a tool, not a voice,” underlines the expanding use of AI in broadcasting while stressing that editorial judgment, credibility and the human voice must remain central. Local radio heads said AI integration could attract more listeners back to audio platforms amid competition from audio-visual media. Stations are exploring AI for content production, archiving, translation into regional accents, audience engagement and improved accessibility, particularly in rural areas. They also emphasised ethical implementation, data privacy and transparency, noting that open-source AI can enhance participation without compromising trust. Experts maintained that when used responsibly, AI will elevate the human voice and strengthen radio’s core values rather than replace them.

AI to Strengthen AIR Operations
“As we celebrate World Radio Day, radio remains a powerful medium for the city. Our station is equipped with highly digitalised studios and advanced software systems. Once the Central Government issues official guidelines on AI usage in workflow, we will begin implementing it, particularly for content generation and operational efficiency.”
- Sujit Bansode, station head, All India Radio (AIR)

AI to boost radio
“Artificial Intelligence will strengthen radio, not replace it. Though some listeners have shifted to digital platforms, radio’s core audience remains loyal. With the right integration of AI tools, content quality, outreach and engagement will improve, ultimately leading to a definite rise in listenership.”
- Sunil Shirsikar, station head, Private Community Radio
