Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:

On the occasion of World Asthma Day, pulmonologists have stressed the urgent need for wider access to anti-inflammatory inhalers as asthma cases rise in urban areas due to pollution and lifestyle factors.

Rising pollution increasing risk

Doctors highlight air pollution, especially vehicle emissions, as a major trigger. In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, nearly 10% of the population is affected, while in Delhi, it rises to 20%. Harmful vehicular emissions, overcrowding, and even household factors worsen respiratory health. Notably, smoke from a single mosquito coil can equal nearly 100 cigarettes, posing higher risks for children.

Genetic and lifestyle factors

Asthma is often linked to family history. If the mother has asthma, the child’s risk is 33%; if the father is affected, it is 25%; and if both parents have it, the risk rises to 50%. Smoking is another major cause, with each cigarette or bidi containing about 4,000 harmful chemicals. Post-Covid complications and stress also aggravate the condition.

Recognising the symptoms

— Persistent cough, especially at night or early morning

— Breathlessness during physical activity

— Chest tightness and wheezing

— Frequent cold, sneezing, or acidity issues

Doctors stress controlling allergies and acidity for better asthma management.

Know this

— A person breathes nearly 10,000 litres of air daily

— Pollen and allergens can travel long distances

— Food like milk, rice or lemon does not cause asthma; chemicals may

Expert advice

Regular inhaler use and yearly lung check-ups are essential

“Do not panic if you have asthma. Do not stop using your inhaler treatment unless advised by your doctor. Make sure to undergo a lung check-up every year and take proper care of your respiratory health.”

– Dr Suhas Bardapurkar, pulmonologist

Asthma controllable with consistent treatment and proper inhaler use

“Asthma cannot be prevented, but it can be controlled. Use inhalers in the correct dosage as prescribed. Once asthma is under control, treatment may be reduced gradually, but consistency is essential and any changes should be made only on a doctor’s advice.”

– Dr Avinash Lamb, HoD respiratory medicine, GMCH

Inhalers effective and safe; self-medication a major concern

“Shifting to EVs can help reduce pollution, but overcrowding and other triggers still need attention. Inhalers remain the most effective treatment for asthma and are not addictive. Self-medication is a bigger concern, as it can lead to complications. Regular inhaler use is cost-effective and helps prevent severe attacks.”

– Dr Masood Ahmed, pulmonologist
