Aurangabad, March 19:

The Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) administrator A K Pandey has informed that the union government has granted Rs 16 crore for taking measures to improve the city's environment and reduce pollution. Hence, the fund will be utilised to develop vertical gardens and water fountains along with it in some parts of the city, he said.

It may be noted that the underground water in MIDC sectors had already been polluted, two decades ago. The air pollution had touched a dangerous level. The rise in SPM in the city's environment is a matter of concern. The AMC is making efforts to curb the pollution and threat due to it in the city. Under the union government's Amrut Yojana, the AMC planted thousands of trees of various species in open spaces and created oxygen hubs. It had also developed 'Jambhul Van' in the vicinity of Harsul Tank.

Now, on the lines of Delhi, the AMC will be developing vertical gardens and fountains in the city. Such gardens had already been developed in many cities of India. The vertical gardens and fountains will help reduce the percentage of SPM in the air, explained the administrator to the media persons.

Flyover to be used for vertical gardens

There are many flyovers in the city. We will use the walls of these flyovers and the walls on the side of important roads to develop vertical gardens. The proposal will be ready soon, said Pandey.

Rs 10 crore for SUDP

The AMC had undertaken the Sewage Upgradation and Development Programme (SUDP), but the project was left incomplete due to the paucity of the fund. The works to the tune of crores of rupees are pending. It includes linking drainage lines to the main sewer lines in some parts of the city. Due to the absence of the linkages, the drainage waste is getting released in the Kham River and is getting polluted. Hence, the fund of Rs 10 crore will be utilised on completing the drainage's important works, it is learnt.
