A social worker and his brother were allegedly attacked with swords and a chopper by a group of 10 to 15 persons in Deolai Shivar on Saturday afternoon after they had lodged complaints with the police against the illegal sale of ration goods and button bullets.
The injured have been identified as Ankush Shrirang Gatkal (47), a resident of Nath Nagar, Vitthal Nivas, currently residing at Deolai, and his brother Lahu Gatkal. Both sustained serious injuries in the assault.
According to the complaint, the incident occurred around 1 pm on March 28 when Ankush Gatkal received a call from watchman Rajput informing him that a group of people had gathered outside Plot No. 45 and were creating a disturbance. Ankush and his brother rushed to the spot to intervene.
While they were attempting to pacify the crowd, accused Sohail Patel, Abuzar Patel, and 10 to 15 others allegedly surrounded them. The accused reportedly confronted Gatkal over repeated complaints regarding ration distribution and sale of button bullets, and allegedly threatened him, saying he would not be spared.
Police said the accused had brought deadly weapons in a sack. Sohail Patel allegedly attacked Ankush Gatkal with a sword, striking near his ear with an intent to kill, leaving him seriously injured. When Lahu Gatkal tried to rescue his brother, Abuzar Patel allegedly attacked him with a chopper, injuring his left hand. He also sustained a sword injury to his finger. The remaining accused allegedly assaulted both brothers with kicks and punches and abused them verbally.
Before fleeing, the attackers allegedly threatened the victims with dire consequences if they continued to file complaints against them.
A case of attempt to murder has been registered at Chikalthana police station against Sohail Patel, Abuzar Patel, and other unidentified accused. Further investigation is being carried out by sub-inspector Uttam Nagargoje.
