Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
Around a dozen newly elected BJP corporators are keen on the post of mayor in the municipal corporation. To assess which corporator would be most suitable, a team from an agency appointed by the BJP is conducting a survey. The same agency had earlier submitted a report predicting that the BJP would cross the 50-seat mark in the civic elections. For the past eight days, the agency has been carrying out an assessment to determine the most suitable candidate for the mayor’s post. The agency is scheduled to submit its final report to BJP state president MLA Ravindra Chavan on Tuesday. Following this, Chavan will hold discussions with the aspirants for the mayoral post. Meanwhile, it has been informed by the BJP that the final decision on the candidate will be taken by senior party leaders by February 5 or 6.
There is also speculation within BJP circles that the party leadership may use a ‘surprise strategy’. Instead of the names currently being discussed, an entirely different name could emerge as the mayoral candidate. There is uncertainty over whether senior leaders will give the green signal to the recommendations made by local leaders. Meanwhile, city BJP president Kishor Shitole said that state president Chavan will hold a meeting at the divisional office at 10.30 am on Tuesday and will be in the city until 3.30 pm.
Group leader likely to be decided today
Behind-the-scenes activity is underway within the BJP, and the party has not yet announced its group leader (Gut Neta) even after 17 days. There is a strong possibility that the name of the group leader will be announced on Tuesday after discussions with state president Ravindra Chavan.
State president to hold discussions with all…
The OBC welfare minister Atul Save said, “The decision regarding the mayoral candidate will be taken at the senior leadership level. It will not require much deliberation. Whoever is selected will be from the BJP. It is not possible to name a likely candidate at this stage. The names of all aspirants have been forwarded to the senior leadership. On Tuesday, Ravindra Chavan will meet either all aspirants or a few selected ones. A party team is also conducting a survey. Based on seniority and experience, Chavan will interact with the aspirants. He will also hold discussions with the local core committee.”
