BJP nominates Anil Makariye; AIMIM fields Khan Abdul Mateen

The election for the post of standing committee chairman will be held on Wednesday. The BJP has announced the candidature of corporator Anil Makariye from the Samarthnagar prabhag. It was almost certain that he would be chosen for the post. Soon after the announcement, Makariye filed his nomination for the chairman’s post at 12.30 pm.

The BJP and Shinde Sena together hold a majority in the standing committee with 10 out of the 16 members. Therefore, the formal announcement of Makariye’s election is expected during Thursday’s voting. The AIMIM has also nominated corporator Khan Abdul Mateen from the Railway Station prabhag, who also submitted his nomination. However, AIMIM has only four members in the standing committee.

The election for the Standing Committee Chairperson will be conducted on Thursday, 12 March, at 11:00 am. With the BJP holding the majority, it is almost certain that the chairperson will be from the party. The BJP has placed its trust in Anil Makariye, who has been elected as a corporator for the second time.

Soon after the announcement of his candidature, BJP and Shinde Sena corporators gathered at the municipal corporation office in the afternoon. Makariye submitted his nomination at the municipal secretary’s office in the presence of mayor Sameer Rajurkar, deputy mayor Rajendra Janjal, city president Kishor Shitole, corporators Shivaji Dandge, Rajgaurav Wankhede, and group leader Govind Kendre, among others. From AIMIM, Khan Abdul Mateen filed his nomination along with party corporators. Leader of the opposition Abdul Sameer, group leader Haji Sherkhan, Ashok Hiwale, Azhar Pathan, and others were present on the occasion.

Party-wise strength in the standing committee

There are 16 members in the committee. The names are BJP’s Kamalabai Narote, Rajgaurav Wankhede, Surendra Kulkarni, Ravi Kawade, Anil Makariye, Archana Neelkanth, Madhuri Adwant and Appasaheb Hiwale; AIMIM’s Khan Abdul Mateen, Meraj Khan, Pathan Mazhar and Khan Almas Khanam; Shinde Sena’s Shweta Trivedi and Raju Rajput; Uddhav Sena’s Sachin Khaire and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi’s Amit Bhuigal.

On Thursday, the presiding officer (district collector) will scrutinise the nominations in the meeting. Later on, 15 minutes time will be spared for withdrawal of nomination. The elections of chairmen of standing committee and five subject committees and vice-chairman of the women and child welfare committee will be held between 11 am and 2.15 pm, it is learnt.

Cabin inspected even before the election

Although the candidature for the standing committee chairman was announced on Wednesday, Makariye inspected the work being carried out in the chairman’s cabin soon after filing his nomination. He expressed displeasure over the slow pace of work and instructed the administration to make alternative arrangements until the work is completed.
