Menopause, often misunderstood and surrounded by myths, took centre stage at the WOW event, “Prepare, Empower, Thrive through Menopause!” hosted at Lokmat hall on Friday, the discussion aimed at educating women on managing this natural transition with confidence.

Bringing together medical and wellness experts, the event encouraged open conversations on menopause, breaking societal taboos. Moderated by WOW founder and mindfulness coach Ruchira Darda, the panel included gynaecologist Dr Ranjana Dhanu, nutritionist Rashmi Somani, and fitness expert Sanjay Patil. Their insights provided a holistic roadmap for navigating menopause through lifestyle changes, nutrition, and medical support. Dr Dhanu highlighted that menopause generally occurs between 41-56 years, but premature menopause can begin as early as 14-22 years, posing risks of osteoporosis, emotional instability, and Alzheimer’s. She advised eliminating white sugar, prioritizing calcium intake, and undergoing regular bone density checks. Fitness expert Sanjay Patil emphasized the role of exercise and stress management, recommending Sheetali Pranayama for night sweats and nutrient-rich foods like macadamia nuts, muskmelon seeds, berries, and leafy greens for hormonal balance.

A natural transition

Nutritionist Rashmi Somani reassured attendees that menopause is a phase, not a disease. She stressed the importance of staying hydrated and maintaining a proper sleep cycle, particularly between 10 pm and 1 am, for hormone regulation. She also advocated for natural oils like groundnut and mustard oil, homemade ghee, and unprocessed salts for better nutrition.

Experts also discussed medical interventions such as estrogen supplements and HRV vaccines, along with the benefits of yoga and aqua workouts to enhance mobility and mood stability. The WOW event sought to break the stigma around menopause by fostering awareness and equipping women with practical solutions for a healthier transition.
