Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

History enthusiasts’ long-cherished dream came true as 12 forts built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, symbols of valour, strategic vision, and governance, were inscribed on the World Heritage List. The recognition follows sustained efforts by the State Archaeology Department, strong political will, and coordinated diplomatic intervention, said Dr Tejas Garge, director of the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums. Dr Garge spoke at a tribute meeting and lecture series organised by INTACH on Sunday at the Govindbhai Shroff Art Academy auditorium, Saraswati Bhuvan, held in memory of eminent historian Dr R. S. Morvanchikar.

He delivered a lecture titled “Forts of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj: The Journey of World Heritage Nomination.” Dr Garge noted that India submits only one proposal annually for World Heritage status. Despite strong contenders such as Varanasi, the Prime Minister prioritised the nomination of Shivaji Maharaj’s forts. He added that technical challenges were addressed through diplomatic support from Delhi to Paris. The programme was presided over by INTACH National president Ashok Singh Thakur, while Dr Dulari Qureshi highlighted Dr Morvanchikar’s contribution to historical research. Entrepreneur Mukund Bhogale delivered the introductory remarks, and the programme was compered by Sanket Kulkarni.
