The district Congress staged demonstrations near the statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar at Bhadkal Gate and in front of the collector office on Monday against the Hathras incident of Uttar Pradesh.
The demonstrators were seeking a speedy trial, justice for the victim, death sentence for the criminals, suspension of police officials for misbehaving with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi and judicial inquiry into the incident. At the outset, demonstrators garlanded the statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.
District Congress president Dr Kalyan Kale, former MLC Subhash Zambad, Zilla Parishad president Meena Shelke, former MLC M M Sheikh, Namdev Pawar, Dr Jitendra Dehade, Kiran Patil Dongaonkar, Ravindra Kale and others participated in the agitation.
The Congress leaders and activists held agitation in front of the collector''s office till 2 pm over the same issue. The agitation began with offering garlands to the image of Mahatma Gandhi. Pradesh Congress vice president Prakash Mugadia, former minister Anil Patel, City Congress president Hisham Usmani, City Mahila Congress president Saroj Masalge Patil and others participated. Later, a memorandum of demands was submitted to the collector.
