The parties of newly elected municipal corporators have not yet registered their groups at the divisional commissioner’s office following the municipal corporation elections. Some corporators have begun registering individually at the municipal secretary’s office. Sources suggest this precaution is being taken to avoid technical issues in the mayor–deputy mayor election.
Under election rules, each party must register its group with the divisional commissioner’s office within one month of the election results being declared. Two or more parties can come together to form a single group. The deadline for group registration is February 15. However, the election for the above two posts will take place before this date.
Since there is no clarity on whether corporators can participate in the election without group registration, some corporators have begun registering directly at the municipal secretary’s office. Once a group is registered, the group leader has the authority to issue a whip. Because groups have not yet been registered, it is unclear who will issue the whip in the mayor–deputy mayor election. So far, only the MIM party has announced a group leader.
