Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

A suspected gas leak triggered a powerful blast in Murtizapur near the airport around 7 pm on Saturday, severely injuring three women and one bystander. Despite the cylinder remaining intact, the gas pressure caused a door to fly off and strike a woman nearby.

Kisan Chavan, a taxi driver, resides in Murtizapur. He was busy preparing for his niece’s wedding on Saturday. Kisan wife Ranjana Chavan (40) and her daughters Jyoti (19) and Trisha (9) suffered over 40% burns. They were checking the source of a gas smell inside their house when the explosion occurred. The impact shattered windows and set the curtains on fire. All three victims were admitted to government medical college and hospital (GMCH). Lata Salve shifted in the private hospital due profuse bleeding and serious injuries.

Two possible causes suspected

MIDC Cidco fire and police officials responded promptly.

1. A fan may have been turned on, triggering ignition due to gas buildup.

2. The gas stove might have been lit without detecting the leak.

A forensic team was called late Saturday to investigate the exact cause.
