Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The municipal corporation has taken up the initiative to make the city free from carry bags and single-use plastic. On the third consecutive day of action, it seized 1,000 kg of plastic carry bags. A raid conducted in the Samtanagar area led to the seizure of 850 kg of carry bags from a house. Besides, inspections of various shops across the city resulted in the recovery of around 150 kg of plastic carry bags. A fine of Rs 37,000 was collected from those found in violation. The municipal corporation has announced that daily inspections of shops and warehouses across the city will continue.
The drive against carry bags began on Wednesday and has received support from representatives across political parties. Despite potential political pressure, the civic body has maintained consistency in its action.
On Friday, acting on a tip-off, a large stockpile was found in a house in the Samtanagar area. During inspection, around 850 kg of carry bags were recovered. The stock was seized and a fine of Rs 25,000 was imposed on one Shaikh Pasha.
Separate teams also inspected several shops across the city, where smaller quantities of banned plastic were found. Fines amounting to Rs 12,000 were recovered from offenders.
In the last three days, the municipal corporation has seized a total of 11,000 kg of carry bags and prevented nearly 4 million (40 lakh) plastic bags from entering the market.
According to deputy commissioner Nandkishor Bhombe, due to fear of action, some plastic traders have voluntarily submitted banned plastic waste to the Solid Waste Management section.
