Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:

Doctors must understand their patients just as artists must understand their audience, said actor Sankarshan Karhade. “If artists understand their audience, they can entertain effectively, and if doctors understand patients, they can examine and treat them better. One truly realises the value of life and doctors only after falling ill,” he remarked.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the ‘IRCON 2026’ conference organised by GovernmentMedical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Tuesday. The conference was inaugurated by the former director of medical education and research, Tamil Nadu, Dr A. L. Meenakshi Sundaram. The event was organised under the leadership of dean Dr Shivaji Sukre, with secretary Dr Gayatri Tadavalkar, vice-dean Dr Prabha Khaire, Dr Vinod Mundada, Dr Suresh Harbade, medical superintendent Dr Suchita Joshi, observer Dr Gautam Savvase, and Dr Kashinath Garkal present on the stage.

Karhade added that no matter how many years doctors serve patients, it is called “practice,” and even after thousands of shows, a play is still called an “experiment.” Practising is the job of doctors, while continuing performances is the job of artists. The programme was compered by Dr Rashmi Bangali, and Dr Rajshri Virshid-Sonawane proposed the vote of thanks.

Retired heads and professors felicitated

During the inauguration ceremony, retired heads of departments and professors were honoured. Among them were former head of geriatrics Dr Mangala Borkar, former head of ophthalmology Dr Kashinath Chaudhary, former head of community medicine Dr Mohan Doibale, along with Dr Sanjay Gaikwad, Dr Naser Ahmed Rizvi, and Dr Dilip Jaiswal.

Stay happy, walk 30 minutes daily

Dr A. L. Meenakshi Sundaram guided the audience in a light-hearted manner, noting that treadmills are often bought but end up being used to dry clothes. He advised walking for at least 30 minutes daily to reduce obesity.
