The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the Department of Forest (DoF) have swung into action to protect the Ajanta Caves from the threat posed by honeybees and to ensure the safety of both domestic and international tourists.
A DoF team led by range forest officer (RFO) Santosh Dhodke adopted natural methods and carried out traditional treatment to gently drive the bees away from their hives. At present, nine hives have been identified at Cave No. 10 and one at Cave No. 9.
Manoj Pawar, Conservation Assistant (Ajanta Sub-circle) of ASI, along with his rescue team, assisted in the operation, which was conducted on Sunday between 7.30 pm and 12.30 am. Officials expect the bees to relocate within 24 hours. The DoF is likely to resume the operation next Sunday evening near Caves 4, 24 and 26.
ASI–DoF personnel injured
The operation was carried out in the evening as bees tend to be less aggressive after dark. However, the swarm became agitated during the process and stung several personnel, including Dhodke, Pawar and other staff from both departments. One of the personnel sustained facial swelling following the bee stings.
