The transport department has taken a strict stance regarding the required documents and eligibility criteria in the e-rickshaw registration process. It has been clarified that registration will not be granted without fulfilling requirements such as a badge, valid driving licence, permit and police character verification.
As per regulations, any public service vehicle owner must possess a valid driving licence and an authorised badge. Police character verification of the driver is also mandatory. However, in the case of e-rickshaws, these norms had reportedly been overlooked in several instances. The transport department has once again issued instructions to RTO offices in this regard.
No alternative to character verification
From the perspective of passenger safety, verifying the background of drivers is essential. Therefore, the transport department has taken a firm stand that there is no alternative to police character verification, making it compulsory. This verification is expected to prevent drivers with suspicious backgrounds or those involved in unlawful activities from entering the transport system. The decision is particularly significant for ensuring the safety of passengers, especially women, students and senior citizens.
Many misused regulatory loopholes
Although the e-rickshaw business is a viable employment option, some individuals were found to have taken advantage of regulatory gaps. In certain cases, vehicles were operated without badges or valid licences, while in others, passenger transport continued without obtaining the necessary permits. This led to unfair disadvantages for honest drivers who complied with the rules.
Resolve pending issues
E-rickshaws were purchased due to government-related policy lapses. A proper solution should be worked out without causing unnecessary financial loss to the owners. Meetings of the authority should be held every three months to promptly address the pending issues and demands of rickshaw drivers and owners.
