Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:

Two youths from Thane, both Chemistry graduates, attempted to set up a factory producing fake MD drugs in Masanatpur. However, within 72 hours, the Narcotics Task Force (NTF) raided the site and arrested both on Monday, seizing 65 grams of MD drug powder.

The state government, under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, established the task force to curb illegal drug sales, transport, and smuggling. On March 16, the city unit received intelligence that MD-like powder was being manufactured in Shahnagar, Masanatpur. Following senior officers’ orders, the team raided the location at night. The suspects, Roshan Ravindra Kadam (32) and Mayur Deepak Jadhav (23, both residents of Anandnagar in Thane), were found producing drugs in a small 6×6-foot room behind a shed used for poultry.

Materials Seized

The seized materials include 65 grams of Methaqualone powder; 490 grams of Crystalline powder; six bottles of chemical reagents; 518 grams of unidentified powder and mixer, glass stirrer, rings, drum, and other equipment.

Background of the two accused

Roshan Kadam holds a Diploma in Chemical Engineering and runs a business, while Mayur Jadhav works as a driver. Through their associate Balasaheb (whose in-laws are in the city), they planned to manufacture the fake MD drugs. To avoid suspicion, the operation was conducted behind a chicken shed. Both have been booked at MIDC Cidco Police Station.

Previous attempts at fake production

In the city, factories producing fake alcohol, gutkha, and aromatic tobacco have been exposed in the past year. The trafficking of MD drugs and hydro ganja has also been reported. Authorities often struggle to trace operations to their source. Young men and women in affluent neighbourhoods are targeted with high-priced drugs.

Dangers of fake MD drugs

Contains toxic chemicals, causing immediate poisoning and potentially death within hours

Affects the brain, leading to hallucinations and unease

Can trigger severe cardiac issues and blood pressure fluctuations

Long-term use may damage kidneys and liver

Experts warn of possible comas
