A 70-year-old widow of an ex-serviceman tried to self-immolate herself, in the lounge of the district collector’s office, on Thursday. Meanwhile, timely action taken by police helped prevent an untoward incident. The widow claimed that she is pursuing the demand to free her 4 acres and 10 gunthas of land from encroachment made by her neighbour for the past 28 years. The government has awarded this land to her husband after returning from the army.
The name of the retired soldier's wife is Kamal Bhagwan Kharat. District Collector Deelip Swami met with Kharat and listened to her grievances. In her statement, Kharat mentioned that her husband, Bhagwan Kharat, was allotted the above area of land by the government in exchange for his service in the army. However, the neighbouring farmer has encroached on this land. Kharat has requested that the current status quo on the land be revoked and the possession be transferred to her. She also asked that orders be given to the circle officer and the talathi to prevent further encroachment. The woman claimed that all records, including the 7/12 extract, are in her name, and both the Vaijapur Court and one another court have ruled in her favour.
Threatening of suicide with family
Kharat threatened of committing suicide along with her widow daughter-in-law and two grandchildren on Friday (on Holi festival) demanding the possession of the above land situated in Rajura (Saja Mandki) bearing survey no. 9 and gut no.12 in Vaijapur tehsil by March 14.
Appeal to be filed upon permission
District Collector said, “ The court ruling has gone against the woman. To fight on her behalf, the district administration has sent a letter to the state's legal department, requesting permission to appeal the court's decision in a higher court. Once the permission is granted, the appeal will be filed.”
