Just 72 hours after giving birth to a baby girl, a 24-year-old married woman, Harshin Hina Khaled Chaus, died due to excessive bleeding on Friday. After delivering her daughter on Wednesday, Harshin did not even get the chance to hold her newborn in her arms.
As her condition deteriorated due to heavy bleeding, fate cruelly separated the mother and daughter within three days. Enraged by the incident, the family accused doctors of negligence and staged a sit-in protest for nearly three hours on Saturday afternoon outside the Osmanpura police station, placing Harshin’s body there. The tension eased only after police accepted the husband’s complaint and assured a transparent inquiry.
The couple, Khaled Chaus and Harshin, residents of Shaha colony, already have one daughter. Harshin was pregnant for the second time. On the 21st, at around 10.30 am, after her health worsened, Khaled admitted her to a private hospital in Osmanpura. A caesarean delivery was performed, and at 1.20 pm Harshin gave birth to a baby girl. Doctors informed the family that the newborn’s condition was critical and placed the baby in an incubator. After Harshin regained consciousness, her husband tried to comfort her and showed her the baby from a distance.
Shifted to another hospital without informing family
At around 5.30 pm, Harshin’s condition worsened again and she began bleeding profusely. By 8 pm, doctors said dialysis was required and called another doctor. Within an hour, without informing the Chaus family, the doctors shifted Harshin to another private hospital in the seven hills area. Even there, the hospital administration did not inform the family about the treatment being given. As a result, the newborn had to be taken home without ever receiving her mother’s first touch.
On Friday afternoon, Harshin died during treatment. Overwhelmed with grief and anger over the alleged negligence and irresponsibility of doctors, the family took custody of the body on Saturday and staged a protest outside the Osmanpura police station. Hundreds gathered, raising slogans against the doctors and demanding registration of an offence and their arrest.
As the situation became tense, deputy commissioner of police Prashant Swami, assistant commissioner Manish Kalyankar and inspector Sangram Tate attempted to pacify the family. After recording Khaled Chaus’s statement, police accepted the complaint, and dcp Prashant Swami assured a transparent investigation and strict action. Following this assurance, the family called off the protest and took the body away.
