On World Autism Awareness Day, a youth’s transformation highlights the impact of early intervention, structured support, and unwavering determination

On the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day, attention turns to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a condition that affects communication, behaviour, and social interaction. For many families, the journey involves daily struggles; understanding a child’s needs, managing behavioural challenges, and ensuring access to proper care and education. Lack of awareness and support often adds to these difficulties. Yet, with early intervention, structured therapies, and a supportive environment, individuals with autism can make significant progress, lead independent lives, and find their place in society with dignity and confidence.

Kiran Joshi’s story is a remarkable example of transformation, determination, and the power of consistent support. Once a child with multiple challenges, Kiran has today emerged as a confident and responsible young individual, becoming a source of inspiration for many.

Around eleven years ago, Kiran, diagnosed with ASD, was brought to Aarambh Society for Autism by his mother with numerous concerns. He was hyperactive, struggled with emotional control, showed aggressive behaviour, and had difficulty in social interaction and basic life skills. Even simple routines seemed difficult to follow.

His journey began to change after joining Aarambh. With structured therapies, behavioural interventions, and continuous guidance, gradual improvements became visible. Over time, his aggression reduced, and he began understanding routines, responding positively, and interacting better with others. His academic abilities also improved, along with reading, writing, and notably, his Marathi handwriting.

Kiran’s growth extended beyond academics. He developed life skills, learned to care for himself, and gradually became a supportive figure for younger children. His talents also flourished; he won a gold medal in photography, became a good dancer, and actively participated in activities like table tennis.

Later, he joined Aarambh’s Vocational Training Center, where he was trained in operating paper plate and pouch-making machines. With dedication and consistency, he mastered these skills.

Recognising his progress, Aarambh offered him employment. Today, Kiran works as a full-time employee, assisting in the school transport system and ensuring the safety of children.

From struggling with basic skills to riding a scooter independently and even offering others a lift, Kiran’s journey stands as a powerful testament to perseverance and the impact of the right support system.
