Shaikh Amjad Asad alias Mohsin (45), an associate of notorious criminal Sheikh Wajed alias Babla, escaped from Harsul Jail around 1 pm on Sunday.

According to prison officials, Amjad, a resident of Jahangir Colony, was serving a life sentence for a kidnapping and murder case registered in 2018, in which a businessman was brutally killed.

He was convicted in 2020 and later transferred from Amravati Jail to Harsul Jail in July 2024. Citing good conduct, prison authorities had assigned him cleaning duties under the open-prison procedure. Taking advantage of this trust, Amjad fled while working inside the jail premises, triggering panic among officials. A case was being registered at Harsul police station late Sunday night.

Crossed all limits of brutality

The case dates back to May 16, 2018, when Babla, Amjad and other associates kidnapped a 30-year-old plotting businessman near Kham Nadi in Bismillah Colony, later murdering him in the Daulatabad area. The crime involved extreme brutality, including mutilation of the body before disposal. In 2020, the court sentenced Babla and four others to life imprisonment till death.
