Here is good news for heritage-lovers and nature lovers in the city as the yesteryear’s pride and forgotten landmarks of the ‘City of 52 Gates’ will be getting a new lease and transformed into a haven place as a local environmental organisation has vowed to glorify the beauty of these heritage gates by developing ‘Green Parks’ in the open spaces within the gates' premises and their surroundings.
EcoSattva’s team of experts comprising Chief Executive Officer Priyanka Waze and advisor Anita Mirashi along with assistant project officer Suyog Warkad visited the gates (like Roshan Gate, Katkat Gate, Jafar Gate etc) on Wednesday. The team inspected the real ground situation and in which possible way the green cover could be developed in the open spaces and the surroundings (if there is space).
EcoSattva officials had also apprised the project to the municipal commissioner G Sreekanth. It is learnt that the green cover at each gate will be developed on the lines of Japan-based Miyawaki Forest. Earlier, the agency developed Green Parks on the premises of various government offices and major companies in the district including Bamu DNA Lab, SRPF Battalion Camp etc, apart from ‘Pocket Park’ near Delhi Gate (corner).
“Within a couple of weeks, the EcoSattva will consult its parent organisation and deploy another team of experts to design the project and devise its implementing schedule. If all goes well, the aim is to encash the monsoon, as the rainfall will help blossom the saplings into trees and develop dense forests. The required funds for the project will be attracted under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) from the companies, establishments and organisations,” said Warkad.

Of all the existing gates, three gates - Delhi Gate, Bhadkal Gate and Makkai Gate - are in the custodianship of the State Archaeology. The remaining gates are in the custodianship of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation (CSMC).
