The State Goods and Services Tax (GST) Department has initiated stringent action against tax defaulters, seizing the immovable property of a prominent trader from Gangapur tehsil over pending dues amounting to oer Rs 1.81 crore.

The outstanding amount had been pending for several years under the Value Added Tax (VAT) and Goods and Services Tax (GST) Acts. Despite repeated notices issued by the department, the trader failed to respond, prompting authorities to proceed with property attachment. The action was carried out under the provisions of the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code, 1966, and Section 79 of the Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017. Earlier, the Sales Tax Department had to execute such recoveries through revenue officials. However, under the GST framework, the department now has the authority to directly initiate such proceedings. The operation was conducted under the guidance of Additional State Tax Commissioner Abhijit Raut and planned by Deputy Commissioner of State GST Chandrashekhar Borde. The team was led by Assistant Commissioner of State Tax Sanjeev Nagargoje, along with State Tax Inspectors (STI's) Archana Zhamkade and Komal Dhawan, and Tax Assistant Kishor Kawade. Recently, a similar action was taken by the State GST Department against another trader in Kannad taluka for pending tax dues of Rs 1.02 crore.

“All taxpayers must ensure timely payment of taxes. In the coming period, more stringent and intensified action will be taken against defaulters.”- Abhijit Raut, Additional State Tax Commissioner
