A 19-year-old married woman from Tuljapur allegedly died by suicide after prolonged physical and mental harassment over a demand to bring five tolas of gold from her parental home. The incident came to light after a complaint was lodged on April 27, following which a case was registered against five members of her in-laws’ family.
The deceased, Namrata Shubham Kadam, had married Shubham Mohan Kadam of Shekapur in Dharashiv tehsil. Taking advantage of the ‘Adhik Maas’ (Dhonda month), her in-laws allegedly pressured her to bring gold from her parents and subjected her to abuse when the demand was not met. Unable to bear the harassment, she returned to her parental home in Vivekanand Nagar, Tuljapur, where she died by suicide on April 24 around 11:45 am.
Based on a complaint by Nita Ganesh Garad, police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against her husband Shubham Kadam, mother-in-law Jayashree Kadam, and others.
The complaint also alleges that the victim was threatened that her husband would be remarried if she failed to fulfil the demand, adding to her distress.
