Another major milestone in the new water supply scheme project was achieved on Monday. A 3,700-horsepower pump at the jackwell constructed at Jaykawadi Dam was started at 8 pm, sending water into the massive 2,500 mm diametre pipeline. Water was successfully carried 4 km along the pipeline, cleaning and flushing it in the process. The pump test was conducted successfully in the presence of municipal commissioner G Sreekanth.
The new water project, being implemented at a cost of Rs 2,740 crore, is gradually completing its various key stages. The Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP) and the municipal corporation are completing the final phases. The first phase is almost complete, and efforts are underway to bring an additional 200 MLD of water to the city. On Gudi Padwa, water from Jaykawadi Dam was siphoned into the jackwell, where it was held for three days.
No major leakage was detected in the jackwell. Following the successful preliminary test, pumping tests resumed on Monday morning. Mahavir Hydro, Flute Electromate, and GVPR jointly conducted the testing. Although testing was planned to start at 5 pm, minor technical issues caused a delay. The pump was finally started at 8 pm in the presence of municipal commissioner, along with MJP chief engineer Manisha Palande and GVPR general manager Mahendra Gogulothu.
Test successful
According to the civic chief and the MJP chief engineer, the 3,700-horsepower pump ran successfully for about one hour, shutting down at 9 pm. Water flowed through the 2,500 mm diametre pipeline, reaching a scour valve near the crematorium after 1 km, where excess water was released. The entire testing process was completed successfully.
Water reached 4 km
The pipeline from Jaykawadi Dam to Nakshatrawadi water treatment plant spans 38 km. Scour valves are placed every 4–5 km to release water and flush out impurities. This pipeline cleaning process is expected to continue for at least 8–10 days.
