Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:

It turned out to be a nerve-wracking moment for the 33 corporators of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) when the party’s group leader Haji Sher Khan arrived late in the House to submit sealed envelopes recommending members for the Standing Committee and five subject committees on Thursday morning.

The special general body (GB) meeting began sharply at 11.30 am. As part of the proceedings, the presiding officer and mayor Sameer Rajurkar instructed the group leaders of various political parties to submit their sealed envelopes containing the names of their nominated members.

Within two minutes, the group leaders of all parties, except AIMIM, submitted their envelopes one after another. The absence of the AIMIM group leader created anxiety among the party’s corporators present in the House.

Taking note of the delay, the mayor issued a three-minute deadline for submitting the envelopes, directing the municipal secretary to proceed with the election process if the submission was not made within the stipulated time.

The tense situation also sparked peels of laughter in the House, with some members wondering whether the delay hinted at a political twist. Meanwhile, a few AIMIM corporators stepped out of the House to make phone calls to find out the whereabouts of their group leader.

However, just a minute before the deadline expired, Haji Sher Khan arrived along with the leader of opposition Abdul Sameer Abdul Sajid and promptly submitted the sealed envelopes, which were accepted by the presiding officer.

Despite the last-minute submission, the party’s apparent lack of discipline remained a topic of discussion in the House until the meeting was adjourned.
