Sessions judge R.D. Khedekar on Monday sentenced Laik Javed Ansari (36), a resident of Kunjkheda, Kannad taluka, to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 for murdering his wife Reshma (23) by strangulation.

Reshma, who had married Ansari about six months earlier in her second marriage, had a five-year-old daughter from her first marriage and had separated due to domestic disputes. She had repeatedly informed her parents about harassment by her husband. Despite a family meeting and attempted settlement, the harassment continued. On the night of October 24, 2024, Reshma again complained to her parents and was sent back home as it was late. In the early hours of October 25, Ansari called his friend Tausif Sheikh and confessed to killing her. Tausif alerted Reshma’s father, Idris Mukhtar Sheikh. When the family reached the house, it was locked; after breaking it open, Reshma was found dead with injury marks on her neck and swollen eyes and lips. Doctors at the government hospital declared her brought dead, following which a case was registered at Kannad police station. The then police inspector B.S. Bhapkar filed the chargesheet. Assistant public prosecutor Arvind Bagul examined 10 witnesses, while police sub-inspector Sanjay Dhumal, head constable V.V. Ghadgi and constable V.G. Kabade handled the prosecution. During the trial, the accused’s phone call, the friend’s testimony and the complainant’s evidence proved crucial.
