Long wait for passports in smart city; process slows down
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:
A sharp rise in passport applications in the city has led to waiting periods of over three and a half months for applicants. Those applying in April are getting online appointment dates only towards the end of July, causing major inconvenience, especially for urgent travel needs.
At the passport office, only about 75 applications are verified daily, slowing the process. Although the number has recently been increased to around 90 through a paperless online system, the rising volume of applications continues to strain service capacity. Applicants receive updates via mobile regarding verification and interviews, but delays persist due to limited daily slots.
Citizens have demanded additional counters, increased staff and technical support, and at least 200 verifications per day. Officials said a proposal has been sent to the central government to enhance infrastructure and authority.
As per data, 18,613 passports were issued by December 2025. Applicants in April 2026 are being given July interview dates.
Growing delays have led to public frustration, with many, including elderly people and children, waiting in the heat for their turn. Citizens have urged authorities to speed up services to match the city’s growing industrial and tourism importance.
