Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:

Two fraudsters robbed an elderly woman by telling her that sarees were being distributed to poor women. In the incident, the thieves stole gold earrings weighing one tola and a necklace (pota) that had been gifted to her by her mother 48 years ago at the time of her wedding. A case regarding the incident that occurred on March 13 was registered at City Chowk police station on March 26.

Padma Argi (65), a resident of Anguribagh, had stepped out of her house at around 11 am on March 13, as usual, to go for household work. While she was walking through the Gulmandi area, two unidentified persons called out to her and stopped her. They told her that sarees were being distributed to poor women nearby, but added that she would not be given one if she was wearing jewellery.

They then asked her to remove her gold earrings (about 5 grams) and the 5-gram necklace she was wearing. Padma removed them and kept them in a handkerchief. The duo then gave her a packet of snacks to eat and, under the pretext that the jewellery might get stolen, took the handkerchief from her.

They pretended to take her to the saree distribution spot, but suddenly fled. Padma searched for them nearby but could not find them. She then realised that she had been cheated. Assistant police inspector Sudhakar Misal of City Chowk police station is further investigating the case.
