Police have arrested Numan Shaikh(Sabzimandi, Paithan Gate), for allegedly glorifying Mughal ruler Aurangzeb during celebrations of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti. A case was registered against him at the Kranti Chowk police station, with the police themselves acting as complainant, senior officials confirmed. During questioning, the accused reportedly stated that he uploaded the video to increase his social media followers. Shaikh had posted a video of himself dancing with a poster of Aurangzeb during the Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations. The video went viral on Wednesday, triggering widespread outrage. Deputy Mayor Rajendra Janjal met the police commissioner and demanded action, following which cyber police traced the accused. Though originally from Paithan Gate, Shaikh is currently residing in Naregaon and works at a mobile phone shop. Investigation revealed that he had posted the video on April 13, deliberately re-sharing an old clip in the backdrop of this year’s April 14 celebrations. Police have booked and arrested him on charges of deliberately attempting to create enmity and promote hatred between two communities. Further investigation is underway.
