Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:

A man accused of stealing gold jewellery and cash from a fellow passenger on a moving train and selling the stolen property has been sentenced to one year of simple imprisonment and fined Rs 2,000 by first class judicial magistrate (railway) S M Aher.

The accused, Mohan Motiram Chavan (55), a resident of Dhumkagaon in Washim district, was convicted in the case. Co-accused Kailas Kashinath Bhute (40), a resident of Aherwadi in Purna tehsil of Parbhani district, was also sentenced to nine days of simple imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000 on January 20, 2026, for possessing stolen property and assisting Chavan in selling it.

The railway court delivered its first judgment under sections 305(c) and 317(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the new criminal law.

Incident details

The incident occurred on July 12, 2025, when the complainant and his daughter were travelling from Hingoli to Thane. While seated on the platform at Purna railway station, the accused befriended the complainant and later travelled with him. Between Partur and Jalna stations, when the complainant went to the toilet, the accused allegedly stole gold jewellery weighing 17 grams and cash amounting to Rs 10,500 from the complainant’s bag.

Following a complaint registered at the railway police station in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, police conducted an investigation and filed a charge sheet, based on which the court passed the above order.
