A man allegedly murdered his younger brother over a minor dispute and staged it as a road accident but medical suspicion unravelled the crime. Sillod Rural police arrested accused Atul Khelwane (34) on Friday and registered a murder case against him.

According to police, Atul and his younger brother Shubham Khelwane (30) got into an argument around 2 pm on May 10 at Mangrul village in Sillod tehsil. In a fit of rage, Atul allegedly assaulted Shubham brutally, causing his head to hit the ground, killing him on the spot. Fearing arrest, Atul told doctors Shubham had died after falling from a motorcycle. Sillod rural police initially registered an accidental death case. Shubham was unmarried and is survived by his parents and three brothers.

Medical suspicion exposes murder

The case turned when medical officers flagged the suspicious nature of the injuries to police. Under the guidance of PI Ravindra Thakur, a team launched a fresh investigation. No clear signs of an accident were found on the motorcycle. Separate statements from brothers Appasaheb and Atul revealed contradictions, prompting intensive interrogation. Atul eventually confessed that Shubham died due to the assault.

Police file complaint, accused sent to custody

Constable Satish Patil lodged the formal complaint at Sillod Rural Police Station on Friday. Atul was arrested from his Mangrul residence around 12.15 am Thursday night and produced before a First Class Judicial Magistrate, who remanded him to three days of police custody, said PI Thakur.
