A new advanced Linac Accelerator, a radiation therapy machine, has been installed at the government cancer hospital. This is the hospital’s third radiation machine. The work of PET scan facility is also in progress. From June, radiation therapy using the third machine along with PET scan investigations will begin.

The meeting was attended by special executive officer Dr Arvind Gaikwad, head of radiation oncology department Dr Balaji Shewalkar, Dr Anagha Varudkar, Dr Aditi Lingayat, Dr Rishikesh Khadilkar, among others. At the beginning, Dr. Shivaji Sukre was felicitated by Dr. Arvind Gaikwad on behalf of the institute for receiving the “Lokmat Marathwada Gaurav” award. Instructions were also given to submit an immediate proposal for setting up a molecular laboratory in the hospital. The ongoing PET scan facility work and the newly installed Linac Accelerator machine were also inspected.

Waiting list to become zero

The hospital’s old Linac Accelerator machine is 13 years old and has completed its lifespan. Currently, radiation therapy is being provided using the TrueBeam Linear Accelerator and Bhabha Tron machines. With the addition of the new Linac Accelerator, around 150 patients can receive radiation daily. As a result, no patient will have to wait for radiation therapy. Dr. Sukre stated that these facilities, along with the new surgical building of the hospital, will be inaugurated together.
