Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:

After the Maghrib prayers on Wednesday evening, the sighting of the crescent moon was announced, marking the beginning of the holy month of Ramzan. Muslims across the city exchanged greetings and extended wishes for the sacred month. Later in the night, special ‘Taraweeh’ prayers began in mosques across the city and surrounding areas. In many mosques, three ‘paras’ (chapters) of the Holy Quran will be recited, drawing large gatherings of devotees. The first roza (fast) will be observed on Thursday after the pre-dawn ‘sehar’ meal.

Ramzan is regarded as a month full of blessings (barakat). The word Ramzan is derived from an Arabic term meaning intense heat. During this month, Muslims are ordained to observe fasting for 30 days. The Arabic word for fasting is Sawm, which means abstinence. From before sunrise until sunset, devotees refrain from eating, drinking, and fulfilling physical needs, seeking the pleasure of the Almighty. Fasting is obligatory for both the rich and the poor, and one of its core purposes is to help the wealthy understand the hardships faced by the underprivileged.

Preparations for Ramadan had been underway in the city for the past two weeks, with mosques being cleaned and decorated. The official announcement of moon sighting was made by the Hilal Committee at City Chowk after Maghrib prayers on Wednesday. Devotees had anticipated the moon sighting, especially since it was confirmed in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

Taraweeh prayers begin

Following the moon sighting, special Taraweeh prayers were offered after the Isha prayers at various mosques across the city. Large congregations gathered at the Jama Masjid, the Shahi Masjid at Kile Ark, and the Shahganj Kalan Mosque. Devotees will partake in the pre-dawn ‘sehar’ on Thursday before beginning their first fast of the holy month.
