The city’s handcart issue has intensified, prompting the Municipal Corporation to appoint a traffic engineer to design permanent routes in coordination with traffic police. The Shahaganj area has seen major congestion over the past eight days, with political parties seeking advantage. A complaint against 11 AIMIM corporators at City Chowk police station has led to a registered case. Similar problems exist near TV Centre, Gajanan Maharaj Temple, and Mukundwadi. Authorities plan continuous movement for handcart operators, designated spots, and trial handcart-free zones at key markets and bus stands. Under the Central Government’s Urban Livelihood Mission, around 14,000 vendors were registered online post-COVID, including stall operators. Now, registration will focus solely on handcart operators, though their exact number in the city remains unknown.
