Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:

The heritage watermill (Panchakki) has fallen into a state of disrepair. Being under the care of the Maharashtra State Board of Wakfs (MSBW), the heritage site has suffered due to lack of adequate attention, resulting in water wastage, theft, and mechanical breakdowns.

Although water flows continuously through the aqueduct (Naher) feeding the panchakki, it is not used effectively. Rapid expansion of residential areas in parts of the city has led to illegal pumps and pipes being installed in the naher, increasing water theft. Consequently, the volume of water reaching the watermill has significantly decreased.

Furthermore, the naher has not been properly cleaned or repaired for many years. Tree roots have intruded into the water source, causing substantial damage to the Panchakki’s pipes and machinery. This obstructs the water flow, and during summer, the watermill often stops functioning entirely.

Hundreds of tourists visit this historic site daily, but many leave disappointed after seeing the dry reservoir and idle wheel. Locals emphasise that removing encroachments from the naher, stopping water theft, and implementing regular cleaning and repairs are essential to restore the waterwheel to working condition.
