Earth is the only planet known to support life, and increasing pollution along with global warming is posing serious threats to its existence, as well as to plants and living organisms, said, director of the APJ Abdul Kalam Astronomy and Space Science Centre at MGM University, Dr Shrinivas Aundhkar.
The lecture was organised by the Sahakarmaharshi Balasaheb Pawar study centre and the department of fine arts at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, on the occasion of Balasaheb Pawar’s birth anniversary. A poster competition on the cooperative movement was also organised during the event. Registrar Dr Prashant Amrutkar presided over the programme, while director Dr Shirish Ambekar was also present.
Speaking on the topic “Let us understand the Earth”, prof Aundhkar said that the Earth’s climate cycle does not depend solely on local factors, but is also influenced by sunspots and changes in space. He also provided information about asteroids that collide with Earth and the ongoing missions aimed at protecting the planet from such threats.
The programme began with an introductory speech by Dr Shirish Ambekar and the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Nikhil Rajvardhan.
