Smuggling of intoxicant pills and liquid drugs from Surat via travel buses continues, with carriers making alternate-day trips posing as passengers. Acting on a tip-off, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force laid a trap at Nagar Naka on Saturday to nab Syed Azhar Syed Akbar (25, Chandmari), brother of notorious offender Andha Firoz.

Around 6 am, as the bus arrived, police moved in, but Azhar spotted them, abandoned his bag, and fled by jumping over the divider. Despite a chase, he escaped due to heavy traffic. The seized bag contained 2,000 pills and 118 bottles of liquid intoxicants. A case has been registered at Cantonment police station.

Background: Azhar’s brother Firoz has over five drug cases and has been arrested twice by the NDPS team for sourcing drugs from Surat. After crackdowns on parcel smuggling, the network shifted to small consignments via individuals.

Operation: Conducted under DSP Sainath Thombre by senior inspector Geeta Bagwade, assistant inspector Deepali Patil, and team members Vishwas Shinde, Nitin Jadhav, Harish Mundhe, Atul Tupe, Rahul Kale, Jyoti Kirtikar, Amrapali Suryavanshi, and Priyanka Pawar.
