Aurngabad, June 21:

A prisoner in Harsul Central Jail refused to eat food because his wife was not coming to meet him.

According to details, Katkar Tawar Chavan was arrested on murder charges from within the jurisdiction of Bidkin Police Station four and half years ago. The case is sub-judice. There were restrictions on relatives meeting with prisoners in the jail due to Covid spread.

Katkar’s wife went to her parents' house at Mali Jalgaon (Rahuri, Ahmednagar) with children since his arrest.

His wife and children did not meet him for one year, nor he got bail. His wife was not talking with him even on his mobile phone.

When he called up to his in-laws' members 15 to 20 days ago, he was informed that his wife married to another man.

He was worried about his children if his wife marries another man. He wanted to talk with his children but could not do so.

Upset over this, he refused to eat a meal since Juen 3.

On realising this, the jail administration tried to convince him, however, he did not eat the meal. When his condition deteriorated in jail, he was admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on June 18. He refused to take treatment at GMCH.

Dean Dr Kanan Yelikar sent a letter to the jail superintendent stating that the life of the prisoner may turn bad to worst if he does not take treatment or meal.

Jail superintendent Jayant Naik, senior jailor V V Sable with the help of police inspector of Rahul Police Station Yadav and police Patil of Mali Jalgaon Patil Hanumant Shinde called the prisioner’s wife, children and father-in-law to GMCH.

The prisoner was informed that his wife did not marry another person. He felt happy to learn that his children are with his wife.

He drank juice in the presence of all and withdrew the decision of not eating food.
