Promising shooter Sambhaji Jhanjhan dies in tragic accident

Sambhaji Jhanjhan (27), son of retired municipal corporation chief fire officer Shivaji Jhanjhan, died in a tragic road accident on Monday at around 10.30 am. An emerging shooting talent and a sports executive officer (SEO), Sambhaji was travelling by car from Pune to Ahmedabad for practice when the accident occurred near Manor in Palghar district in the early hours of the morning. He sustained critical injuries and passed away while being taken to hospital. The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the Parijatnagar area, where the Jhanjhan family resides.

Sambhaji was serving as a SEO at Balewadi, Pune. He had a deep passion for shooting from a young age, which was actively encouraged by his father, Shivaji, an ex-chief fire officer. Between 2011 and 2025, Sambhaji participated in several competitions and won 75 medals and certificates. He had been preparing for upcoming national-level shooting competitions over the past few days.

On Monday at around 7.30 am, Sambhaji left for Ahmedabad along with two friends in a car for practice. Near Manor, the car collided with another vehicle from the left side. Sambhaji, who was seated in the front passenger seat beside the driver, sustained severe injuries. The other two occupants of the car suffered minor injuries. Despite being rushed to hospital, Sambhaji succumbed to his injuries on the way.

His untimely death has caused widespread sorrow in the city’s sporting community. Notably, Sambhaji had received his appointment as a SEO just two months ago. Shivaji’s daughter, who is an MS student and resides in Pune. Upon receiving news of the accident, his daughter and his brother, retired agriculture officer Harishchandra Jhanjhan, rushed to the accident site.

The mortal remains were brought to the city late on Monday night. The funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9 am at the crematorium near Central Octroi Checkpost in Cidco N-6 sector.
