In a city striving to become a smart city, garbage accumulation is becoming an increasingly visible problem. A large government plot near the Mahsul Prabodhini and behind the Social Justice Department has turned into a dumping ground, raising concerns among alert citizens that the area could soon become a new ‘garbage hub’ if authorities fail to act promptly.
While waste collection in residential areas has improved due to regular visits by municipal garbage vans, the situation is starkly different in commercial zones and along main roads. Garbage collection vehicles do not operate consistently in these areas, leading shopkeepers and traders to dispose of their waste in nearby open spaces, often during the night. As a result, heaps of garbage are steadily increasing along major roads.
Government land in poor condition
A large open plot near the Mahsul Prabodhini, earmarked for a milk dairy sub-centre, is currently being misused as a dumping site. Ironically, the administration has installed warning boards stating ‘Do not dump garbage here, or legal action will be taken.’ However, these notices appear to have little to no effect on violators, as waste continues to accumulate around them.
Need for penal action
Residents have pointed out that merely installing signboards is not sufficient and reflects administrative apathy. No strict action is being taken against those dumping waste. If the situation persists, the site designated for the proposed dairy sub-centre could soon be overtaken by a massive garbage heap, they warned.
