A railway JCB damaged an underground 33 kV MSEDCL cable during excavation near Shivajinagar underpass on Tuesday around 5 pm, cutting power to the Sutgirni substation and plunging Garkheda into darkness through the night.

MSEDCL diverted the load to the Chikalthana substation, but high summer demand overloaded the line by 7.30 pm, forcing rotational load-shedding across 11 kV feeders. Engineers completed two cable joints and restored full supply by 2.30 am.

Residents bore the brunt fans and coolers dead in peak heat, with children and the elderly suffering most. Voltage fluctuations also raised fears of appliance damage among locals.

Quotes:

"Our appliances were damaged earlier due to voltage fluctuations. The heat is unbearable without electricity."

-Rajesh Mankar, Sahakar Bank Colony

"Children and elderly are suffering badly. MSEDCL should urgently address this."

-Sahebrao Nikam, Ulkanagari
