A very rare aortic dissection surgery was successfully performed on a 34-year-old female patient at Seth Nandlal Dhoot Hospital.

The aorta is the largest blood vessel that supplies blood to the body from the heart. However, the female patient admitted to Dhoot hospital was diagnosed with an enlarged aorta. The result can be fatal. Therefore, a team of cardiac surgeons Dr Manish Puranik and Dr Ashish Agarwal decided to perform a surgery. The 7 hours long surgical procedure involved identifying the tear, cutting a diseased segment of the aorta and replacing it with a prosthetic implant. “The most challenging part of the surgery was to maintain patient in suspended animation (total circulating arrest)”, Dr Puranik said. "When aorta needs to be replaced, for few minutes the whole natural blood circulation has to be stopped, so neither heart is pumping, nor the heart-lung machine (HCM) is pumping blood to patients system. The patient is as good as dead for that period of time," Dr Puranic added. After 30 to 45 minutes, the torn blood vessel has to be replaced by raising the body temperature to 25 degrees. This puts the patient''s life in danger. However, cardiac surgeon was successful in performing this feat. Team of Dr Balaji Asegaonkar, Dr Deepak Borde (Ozone anaesthesia group), Zaheer Shaikh, surgical assistant Dr Manish Sahu was also involved in the procedure. Director Dr Vijay Borgaonkar and CEO Dr Himanshu Gupta congratulated the team.
