A sudden server outage at State Bank of India (SBI) on Wednesday brought crore-rupee transactions to a standstill across the city and district, affecting all branches in Maharashtra.

Staff discovered the servers were down on starting their computers, and unlike previous incidents, the problem persisted past 1 pm. Key operations cash deposits and withdrawals, cheque clearance, RTGS, and NEFT were disrupted, leading to long queues and frustrated customers, especially at Doodh Dairy Chowk, Cidco, Bajrang Chowk, and Shahganj. Salaried employees, traders, businessmen, and senior citizens were particularly affected. With no clear information on when operations would resume, customers grew increasingly uneasy. “I’ve been here since morning, but not a single transaction has gone through,” said an irate customer, Manoj Vadodkar. Bankers struggled to provide information, while ATMs and online banking remained operational. Informal assurances were given that services would soon resume.

60 branches affected across the district

With banking now fully computerized, the outage disrupted all work in about 60 district branches, forcing staff to focus on pending non-transactional tasks.
