Panic was triggered at the airport after live cartridge were found in the handbag of a Delhi-based passenger during Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) screening while he was returning after temple visits in the state.

The CISF immediately alerted the local police, following which a case was registered against Rameshkumar Sakhrani (60,Delhi), at the MIDC Cidco police station. The incident occurred on January 28 during routine checks ahead of the Air India flight to Delhi scheduled at 8.40 am. CISF sub-inspector Hanuman Meena and his team detected images of live ammunition during scanning in the Security Hold Area. On inspection, Special live cartridge (38 GFL) were recovered from Sakhrani’s handbag. He failed to produce any arms licence and was detained. Senior police inspector Somnath Jadhav and assistant inspector Bharat Pachole questioned Sakhrani after he was handed over to the MIDC Cidco police. Sakhrani, a retired employee of an English newspaper, had arrived in the state on January 25 to attend a satsang in Sangli and later visited Bhimashankar, Shirdi and Grishneshwar. Police suspect the cartridges may have entered his bag during the journey when it was kept outside before temple visits. Further investigation is underway.
